Honey guide
Storing honey properly – how to keep it fresh for a long time
Stored properly, honey stays aromatic for a very long time. With these simple rules, your honey keeps its flavour and consistency.
Cool, dry and dark
It is best to store honey at an even room temperature (about 15 to 20 degrees), dry and protected from sunlight. Heat and light break down aroma and valuable ingredients.
Close the jar tightly
Honey attracts moisture and foreign odours. Therefore always keep the jar tightly closed and take the honey out with a clean, dry spoon.
Shelf life
Thanks to its low water content, honey has a very long shelf life by nature. The printed best-before date is required by law – stored properly, honey is generally edible well beyond it.
Frequently asked questions
Does honey belong in the fridge?
No. In the fridge, honey crystallises faster and becomes hard. Room temperature is ideal.
How long does honey keep?
Very long. The best-before date is usually two years, but with proper storage honey remains edible for considerably longer.
My honey has become solid – is it bad?
No, crystallisation is completely natural. In a warm water bath at no more than 40 degrees it becomes liquid again.
